Welcome to the official website of the strange novella "Artifice Breached". Conceived as an experiment form the first word all the way through the completion of the self-publishing process, this novel is meant to be a satire of modern storytelling conventions by bringing the tropes of old B and Z-Grade movies to the forefront. If, in today's world, superheroes with crazy costumes and diverse origins can be accepted as "real" stories, than there must be something in "how" those stories are told to allow people to suspend their disbelief at the outset and accept the artifice those stories will present to them. What goes in to crafting such an artifice, and how far can it be stretched before it breaks, and those stories are no longer accepted? The story of "Artifice Breached" concerns the end of the world, the coming apocalypse, and the notion that such a thing is as absurd as all of the end-of-the-world scenarios have been as they have played out in various old movies. Those who are "running the show" are using some of those very same scenarios to bring about the end of humanity, but in order to convince humanity that any of this is happening, it has to seem "interesting." Yes, just like any movie you've ever seen. There's a small hidden town which serves as the staging area for a zombie apocalypse. Elsewhere, aliens have penetrated an underground military base. The military has tracked giant mutated tarantulas around the country. Even our country might not work in the quite the way we imagined, as it might be just a staging area for even bigger things. Yes, all of these scenarios are absurd. In "Artifice Breached," these scenarios begin to overlap, but they can only be sustained by the same rules that form the basis of good storytelling: there must be some reason to invest in these stories, to suspend disbelief and accept the artifice upon which these stories are inherently built.
